West Belfast community sponsors mural for 'living heroes' at Community Rescue Service

A new mural has appeared on the International Wall in West Belfast dedicated to a group of "living heroes."

On Northumberland Street, a brand new mural in recognition of the Community Rescue Service (CRS) is now firmly in place.

Sponsored by cross-community black taxi tour company, Cab Tours Belfast, its aim is to show tourists visiting Belfast that there are everyday heroes among us.

Speaking to Belfast Live at the mural's launch, Stephen from Cab Tours Belfast said they were happy to help bring the mural to life to highlight the great work of the group.

He said: "We bring tourists in and out of communities here, talking to them about past heroes from both of these communities. We thought it right that we should sponsor this CRS mural to show people who are real, living heroes, that aren't recognised enough.

"Whether it's at four in the morning or on Christmas Day, these guys get up, run out, and bring lost ones home to their families. We thought it right to put something up and show off these people are the real heroes from both of these communities. It doesn't matter your colour or creed, they're always here to help.

"The response has been very good. We bring tourists around and tell them about these living heroes. They don't hear about these guys, they don't get enough recognition for their work. Tourists are told about past heroes instead.

"Their hard work needs to be highlighted more."

The CRS responds to more than 400 missing person and emergency incidents every year, with members volunteering in excess of 90,000 hours of their time.

The new mural shows volunteers from the group, including its founder Sean McCarry. A number of these volunteers were in attendance in West Belfast on Saturday, November 27 to see the finished mural in all its glory.

Darren Harper, District Commander Belfast for the Community Rescue Service said: "It's great to see something like this dedicated to volunteers.

"It's brilliant to recognise the hard work of Sean McCarry in setting the group up and his dedication to it over 15 years. There are people spending Christmas with their families that wouldn't have if it wasn't for him."
