West Belfast community rallies together to help out football kids

A West Belfast community has rallied together to help transform a piece of grassland that will be used by a local football club.

The area in Springhill Park - which is used by Cumann Spoirt An Phobail - was damaged last weekend after a motorbike was raced across the pitch before being burnt out, leaving the kids having to play around the wreckage.

But less than a week on and the park has been repaired.

"The damage was caused last weekend and it left a right mess," said Cumann Spoirt An Phobail committee member Joe McDonnell.

"The kids train there and play some games there, but they weren't able to go near the burnt out bike.

"We were due to play against a Glentoran team on the grass but the bike was still there, so we contacted Sinn Fein councillor Stevie Corr to see if he could help out.

"Within an hour he had arranged for Belfast City Council to take away the bike which, and then Stevie organised for some pitch markings to be added so the kids can play matches there.

"The plan now is to get some of the railings fixed, because at present people are allowing their dogs to get into the park and make a mess.

"It was just a great community effort from everyone, from Cllr Stevie Corr and Belfast City Council to Springhill Residents Association and Cumann Spoirt An Phobail. Everyone behind the scenes worked so hard.

"All this happened within a week so we are delighted with the end result.

"Some of our youth teams have started using Springhill Park to attract more children from the local community to join the club, so it is an important piece of land."

Councillor Corr added: "We aim to secure the pitch site over the coming weeks for the junior CSP teams, and to get new lights along the pathway.

"CSP will also work with ourselves and the Springhill Residents to paint the existing fence.

"It is positive, connected working for the betterment of our community and our young people."
