West Belfast campaigners walk more than 70 miles to Derry in memory of family and friends lost to suicide

A group of campaigners from Belfast have walked more than 70 miles to Derry in an effort to raise money for suicide awareness.

The West Belfast group set off on Saturday and arrived in the North West on Sunday, raising more than £3100 in the process.

Déaghlán MacMaolain, who set-up the GoFundMe Page, said he decided to do the walk in memory of family, friends and "the countless amounts of other loved ones that have been lost to this tragedy".

Welcoming the group into Derry on Sunday, local MLA Martina Anderson paid tribute to the group.

The Sinn Fein MLA said: “Déaghlán MacMaolain was the driving force behind this initiative to help a group doing good work, so well done  to Déaghlán and his friends for doing this.

"Behind all the statistics are real people, and families who are hurting and lives left shattered by suicide.

"We need to listen to our young to know what’s going on and at the same time providing them with as much help as we can.

"There is always help available and I could encourage anyone who is in difficulty to reach out."
