This week has seen yet another brutal cycle of violence in Israel and the occupied West Bank. It is a story you may well feel you have heard before: a Palestinian attack on Israeli civilians, and a response described as disproportionate or even collective punishment.
However, what's different this time is that the Israeli response has come not from the Israeli Defense Forces, but from Israeli civilians – settlers in the West Bank who took it upon themselves to seek revenge for the murder of two of their own by heading to a Palestinian village to torch homes and cars.
In addition, the Israeli army is accused of doing little to stop what unfolded. Is it too late to break this latest cycle of violence?
