West Asia crisis, energy supply and bilateral ties: Key takeaways from Putin's China visit

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to China has placed global geopolitical tensions, the West Asia crisis, and the deepening China-Russia partnership firmly in focus.

During his visit, Putin discussed with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping regional conflicts, energy cooperation, technology partnerships and global governance, while both sides projected their ties as a stabilising force amid an increasingly volatile international situation.

Xi urges immediate end to West Asia conflict

Russian President Vladimir Putin, during his official visit to China on Wednesday, held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, where the two leaders called for stronger China-Russia cooperation, discussed the escalating crisis in West Asia, and reaffirmed expanding ties in energy, technology and global governance amid growing geopolitical tensions.

During the meeting, Xi Jinping warned that the Gulf region stood at a “critical juncture between war and peace” and called for an immediate halt to the violence in West Asia.

“Currently, amid the chaos in the international situation, aspirations towards peace still remain the expectation of our nation. As permanent members of the UN Security Council and important powers of the world, Russia and China must strive for cooperation on a higher level, building a just system of global governance,” Xi said.

Putin highlights energy and technology cooperation

Putin, in response, underscored Russia’s commitment to maintaining stable energy supplies to China despite instability in the Middle East.

“Amid the crisis in the Middle East, Russia still remains a reliable energy supplier of energy resources for China. We have major projects going on in transport, economy and high technology,” the Russian President said.

Visit comes days after Trump’s Beijing trip

The high-profile visit comes only days after US President Donald Trump travelled to Beijing, adding fresh geopolitical significance to the Moscow-Beijing engagement.

Xi accorded Putin a grand reception in Beijing, while Russian state news agency TASS reported that the Russian President had described bilateral ties as having reached “a truly unprecedented level” shortly before arriving in China.

China says talks aimed at deeper strategic alignment

According to the Chinese foreign ministry, the visit includes extensive discussions on bilateral relations, cooperation across multiple sectors, and key international and regional developments of shared concern.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said the trip marks Putin’s 25th official visit to China and highlighted the “profound strategic alignment” between the two nations.

“The two sides will take this visit as an opportunity to continue to promote the development of China-Russia relations to a higher level, which will inject greater stability and positive energy into the world,” Guo said during a media briefing on Monday.

Since Xi assumed office in 2012, the Chinese and Russian leaders have met dozens of times and have frequently referred to each other as “dear friend”, repeatedly emphasising mutual trust and long-term strategic cooperation between Beijing and Moscow.
