Wes Nelson didn't expect music to go viral after turning down major record labels

His music is championed by actor and DJ Idris Elba, boxer Anthony Joshua and he even impressed Brit-winning rapper Dave.

He was the subject of a bidding war between three major record labels – and turned down the chance to work with Simon Cowell.

And he started his credible music career... on Love Island.

Former Islander Wes Nelson spent last year on the reality TV circuit, with stints on Dancing on Ice, Celebrity Antiques Roadshow, the Crystal Maze and even Cowell’s Celebrity X Factor.

But with his debut single set to storm the Top 3 today, he’s taken an infinite hiatus from the reality merry-go-round.

“There’s been quite a few shows and opportunities, which I turned down,” he says. “I hadn’t signed a record deal.

“One of my managers was like: ‘Um, are you sure?’ He was confused. But I wanted music for longer.”

Yet he also turned down interest from Syco shortly after last year’s X Factor, where he joined a Love Island supergroup.

“I wanted full control of what I put out,” he explains. “It was blind faith.”

Aside from TV, Wes has another back-up option in the unlikely event he needs one – he’s a nuclear engineer.

“I could go back, but I’m going to focus on music for now,” he laughs.

Wes’s new single, See Nobody, is available to buy now.
