Wes Martin’s skill in pass blocking makes him intriguing rookie option

The Washington Redskins made a point to address the offensive line multiple times in the 2019 draft.

One of those was Wes Martin in the fourth round, a guy who could end up playing a bigger role than expected as a rookie.

After all, Martin was key in pass protection during his college days, per Brittney Bridges of Redskins.com:

“As a redshirt junior in 2017, Martin recorded the most pass-blocking snaps in the nation without allowing a sack (569), helping Indiana finish third in the Big Ten in passing offense that season.”

The Redskins sound ready to give Ereck Flowers a serious shot at the starting job at guard going into next season despite his recent arrival and move over from tackle.

But if Martin has a quick adjustment to the pro game and his prowess in protection translates, he’s going to be hard to ignore over the course of the summer.

And when it comes to making sure a rookie like Dwayne Haskins develops well, the experience up front doesn’t matter as much as the quality of play, so Martin has a fair shot.
