Wes Martin might still have a shot at taking Ereck Flowers’ spot

Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden has made it sound like Ereck Flowers will be the starting left guard in Week 1.

But let’s not count out rookie guard Wes Martin just yet.

Craig Hoffman of 106.7 The Fan was one of the first to point out this particular battle might not be so wrapped up: “Gruden says Ereck Flowers is currently the starting LG, but Wes Martin is gonna get a ton of snaps Thursday. Doesn’t sound 100% solidified.”

It is hard to disagree. Gruden also promised nothing for Josh Doctson, yet some noticed the general vibe seemed to be that Doctson wasn’t long for the roster, hence new reports.

Meaning, if Martin goes out and looks good in the fourth preseason game, the Redskins might have to reevaluate the current decision.

Flowers has struggled in most positions since entering the league, but he did look better at guard this summer than tackle. That has left Donald Penn free to start at left tackle.

But Martin has impressed in his own ways, so this sort of open door with almost two weeks to go before the opener still makes the rookie one of the most interesting players to watch on the team during the final exhibition.
