Wes Hoolahan is on the comeback trail after his injury setback.
The former Ireland star hasn’t played for his Australian club Newcastle Jets since suffering “major ankle ligament and cartilage damage” in September.
Hoolahan, 37, had surgery on his right ankle in Sydney six days later and endured a frustrating spell on the sidelines as a result.
But the ex-League of Ireland and Norwich City star is ramping up his recovery mission and is back on the training ground.
Hoolahan will return to the training ground tomorrow having been given the green light to resume running.
Up to now he has been cycling in the gym and swimming, although it will still be a number of weeks before he takes a full part in training sessions.
Jets boss Ernie Merrick said: “Wes Hoolahan is madly cycling and swimming.
“On Tuesday he’ll be really happy... because on Tuesday - which is the first Tuesday in January - he’s allowed to start running.
“He’ll be on the AlterG (anti-gravity) machine, he’s excited about that.”
