Wes Hoolahan signs one-year extension with Cambridge United

Wes Hoolahan has committed to a 21st season in professional football after signing a one-year contract extension with Cambridge United.

The former Republic of Ireland star, 39, was a driving force in the U’s promotion to League One after finishing second in League Two.

And Hoolahan, who will turn 40 next May, was also named on the League Two ‘Team of the Season’.

The Dubliner said: “I’m really excited and I’m buzzing to sign for another year. I really enjoyed last season after getting promoted and I’m looking forward to League One.

“I took a few weeks off and thought about the decision as I knew Cambridge were interested in offering me a contract.

“I wanted to do it again in League One as we finished on such a high last year with a great bunch of boys.”

Cambridge’s stunning season was more than Hoolahan could have hoped for but he knows it will be a tougher task in League One.

He continued: “Sitting here last year did I imagine we would get promoted? I’d probably say no. But with the squad we have, it was brilliant to achieve what we did.

“We’ve a great manager and a great bunch of lads and the foundations were there to do what we did.”

Hoolahan continued: “It will be a difficult season (in League One) and probably not as good as last year, but we’ve a good squad.

“Hopefully we can build on that winning mentality and go into League One on a high.”

Cambridge boss Mark Bonner hailed Hoolahan for his ‘exceptional’ contribution to their promotion push and is thrilled to see the playmaker agree new terms.

Bonner said: “Wes extending his contract with us is superb news for the team and the supporters who were unable to see him live last season.

“His contribution last season was exceptional. Firstly, as a player his goal involvements, chances created and creativity contributed greatly to our attacking prowess.

“Secondly, his mindset and winning mentality was something that helped drive the standards and expectations of the team.

“Thirdly, his humility and character made him an outstanding role model to all of us.”

Bonner added: “His experience and temperament will rub off on everyone again as we approach tougher games and bigger atmospheres.

“His presence continues to improve the players around him.”
