Wes Hoolahan is everyone's favourite player as Cambridge knock Newcastle out of FA Cup

Wes Hoolahan played a silky cameo role as Cambridge United sensationally knocked Newcastle United out of the FA Cup on Saturday.

The Dubliner is four months shy of his 40th birthday but still retains all of the ability that made him a fan favourite for the Boys in Green.

Hoolahan was a 60th minute sub after Joe Ironside stunned St James' Park in the 56th minute to put Cambridge 1-0 ahead.

Clearly manager Mark Bonner then wanted the U's to hold onto the ball as much as possible, hence his near-immediate turn to veteran midfielder Hoolahan.

With the help of a number of intelligent passes from Hoolahan, League One Cambridge were able to hold out for a famous third-round victory over cash-rich Newcastle.

Another poor result for Eddie Howe's Newcastle will be big story across the water, but for Irish fans it was great to see Hoolahan still strutting his stuff.

The midfield maestro made 43 senior appearances for Ireland before announcing his retirement in February 2018, and some fans even want him to get an international call-up:
