Werner and Ziyech are home while new coach sorts defence - Things we spotted in Chelsea training

Chelsea get their first pre-season friendly under way this afternoon when they take on Brighton & Hove Albion.

The Blues travel to the AMEX Stadium to take on the side who they will face in the opening day of the new Premier League campaign.

Frank Lampard has had his players back in training this week, and the last session before their first 90 minutes was at Stamford Bridge, rather than Cobham.

Here are a few things we learned from the session.

The ultimate lowdown on Malang Sarr

Anthony Barry makes his presence known

Not only have Chelsea been busy in the transfer market, they have been busy to strengthen in the backroom staff.

The Blues added Anthony Barry from Wigan, a first team coach who went through his badges with Lampard and Jody Morris.

Barry is expected to help strengthen the Chelsea defence for the 2020/21 campaign and he is already making his presence known.

The coach is working on the shape of the team through match scenarios and his impact will have an effect of the Blues defence.

First taste for Ziyech and Werner

Hakim Ziyech might know Stamford Bridge well after his performance for Ajax in the 4-4 Champions League draw last season.

However, it was his first taste at the ground in Chelsea colours, as it was for Timo Werner during the session.

With no fans in the stands, the players will have to deal with that once again with supporters not yet allowed for matches.

But for Ziyech and Werner it was the first taste of playing with their new teammates in their new home.

Rudiger goes in hard

Antonio Rudiger admitted that he didn’t have the best 2019/20 campaign and he will be hoping to put that right.

When he is at his best, the Germany international is still the number one defender that the Blues have, but he didn’t have his greatest season.

However, he showed in the session that he wasn’t willing to take it lying down, going in with a sliding challenge on new signing Ziyech.

Ampadu and Gallagher

Two players who could head out on loan but are trying to make an impression in the squad are Conor Gallagher and Ethan Ampadu.

Both youngsters are likely to be playing the 2020/21 campaign away from Chelsea, but both are looking to see if they can make Lampard’s squad.

The pair were part of the session at Stamford Bridge and will be making the trip down to Brighton to take part of the friendly.
