The long-awaited Chilcot report into Britain’s role in the Iraq conflict has delivered a devastating critique of Tony Blair’s decision to go to war in 2003.
Published on Wednesday, it concluded that the UK chose to join the US invasion before peaceful options had been exhausted, and that there was no immediate threat from Saddam Hussein.
The report says the then Labour government failed to anticipate the war’s disastrous consequences. These included the deaths of at least 150,000 Iraqis – plus many more civilians – and 179 UK servicemen and women. The war left more than 1 million people displaced.
