Newcastle and Gateshead's first Try on the Tyne duathlon saw a mixed field of athletes line up on the Quayside for a series of races.

Runners and duathletes of all all abilities were encouraged to sign up for the events, which included two duathlons (run-bike-run races), a 5k run, a 10k run and junior races.

Organisers Steve Cram and Allison Curbishley hope to bring a triathlon to the Quayside in the future.

We sent a photographer to capture the first event, which was hailed as success by organisers. This weekend's rain even held off for the races.

International and club athletes were among those taking part, along with rookies and fun runners.

One man, Deano Franciosy, completed a sub 30 minute 5k run - with a WHEELIE BIN strapped to his back.
