Were you a Kindertransport child?

The government voted against accepting a cross-party amendment on Monday that would have seen the UK accept 3,000 child refugees.

In a bid to help thousands of stranded refugee children in mainland Europe, the amendment to the immigration bill was initially proposed by Lord Alf Dubs, who himself benefitted from the Kindertransport programme which helped children before the second world war began.

Set up in order to help house displaced children and backed by the government, the Kindertransport provided homes to those in concentration camps, in orphanages or whose parents were too impoverished to care for them.

With MPs voting against the proposals in the House of Commons we’d like to hear from those who were Kindertransport children. What were the circustmances behind your experience? How did the programme help you?
