'We're going to party': Macy Gray is bringing her iconic voice back

American soul star Macy Gray is returning to Newcastle for the first time in more than a decade as part of a month-long Australian encore tour.

The I Try hitmaker will play shows at The Station in Newcastle on Saturday, September 19, before returning to the Hunter on Sunday, October 11, to close her tour at the Shoal Bay Country Club.

The 20-date tour also features shows at Port Macquarie's Tacking Point Tavern (September 20), Woodport Hotel in Erina (September 26), and the Tamworth Town Hall (September 27).

Gray, 58, last toured Australia in 2024, but the concerts were predominantly in capital cities.

Her one and only Newcastle show was at Lizotte's in 2015.

"The band and I have always had a ball 'down under' and we can't wait to see you all again," Gray said.

"This time, I'm heading to places I've never been before and will get to see so much more of your beautiful country.

"We're going to be performing all the songs you want to hear, plus a few from my new album, The Trouble with the Truth.

"Australia will be the first audience to hear tracks from the new album live so get your dancing shoes ready and come along and party with us at a show near you."

The Grammy Award-winning artist is best known for raspy and soulful vocals and her 1999 smash I Try, which topped the ARIA charts in 1999.

The subsequent album On How Life Is also peaked at No.1 in Australia and sold seven million copies globally and spawned the singles Still and Do Something.

In March Gray made a surprising return by releasing a cover of Right Said Fred's 1991 hit I'm Too Sexy.
