NEW DELHI: In a stunning upset, Mitchell Weiser's goal secured a historic 1-0 victory for Werder Bremen over Bayern Munich on Sunday, breaking a 27-game winless run against the German champions.
This unexpected result kept Bayer Leverkusen seven points clear at the top of the Bundesliga.
Weiser, a former Bayern player, scored the only goal of the match in the 59th minute, gliding down the right wing and blasting the ball into the net.
This win marked Werder Bremen's first victory over Bayern in any competition since 2008 and their first Bundesliga win against the champions in 27 matches, including 26 losses.
Bayern, last held scoreless in the league in February 2020, failed to break through the resilient Werder Bremen defense, securing their second league loss of the season.
The defeat came after Bayer Leverkusen's 3-2 win at Leipzig, increasing the pressure on Bayern, who went into the game with two games in hand.
"We showed everything you need to show to win here. Today we had a perfect day -- and with that, you can beat Bayern," said Weiser after the match.
Bayern manager Thomas Tuchel expressed disappointment with his team's performance, stating, "After the Leverkusen result, we wanted to start aggressively and send a signal, but we didn't succeed at all."
The victory lifts Werder Bremen nine points clear of the relegation places, while Bayern has an opportunity to cut the gap at the top when they play their game in hand at home to Union Berlin on Wednesday. The Bundesliga continues to deliver surprises, with Werder Bremen's historic win adding another twist to the 2023-2024 season.
