'Wenger's true successor' - Arsenal fans are ecstatic after Mikel Arteta replaces Unai Emery

Mikel Arteta is the new head coach at Arsenal.

The club announced on Friday afternoon that the former Gunners player has re-joined the club as Unai Emery's replacement at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal have been searching for a successor since the sacking of Emery three weeks ago, with Freddie Ljungberg taking interim charge of the team for the past five games.

Arteta has left his role as assistant manager to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City in order to take up the role, with the Spaniard officially becoming head coach on Sunday, after Arsenal's Premier League game against Everton at Goodison Park.

Speaking upon the announcement, Arteta spoke of his delight at re-joining the club.

"This is a huge honour. Arsenal is one of the biggest clubs in the world," he told the club's official website.

"We need to be competing for the top trophies in the game and that’s been made very clear to me in my discussions with Stan and Josh Kroenke, and the senior people from the club.

“We all know there is a lot of work to be done to achieve that but I am confident we’ll do it. I’m realistic enough to know it won’t happen overnight but the current squad has plenty of talent and there is a great pipeline of young players coming through from the academy.”

Arsenal fans have also been reacting to the long-awaited news of the appointment.
