Wendy Williams Addresses Diagnosis Of Aphasia And Frontotemporal Dementia

Williams acknowledges primary progressive aphasia and frontotemporal dementia diagnosis.

Wendy Williams has publicly acknowledged her diagnosis of primary progressive aphasia and frontotemporal dementia for the first time. In a statement released to PEOPLE, Williams expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support she has received from fans following the news.

Primary progressive aphasia and frontotemporal dementia are conditions that have presented significant challenges in Williams' life. Primary progressive aphasia affects communication abilities, while frontotemporal dementia impacts the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain, leading to speech issues, emotional changes, and personality alterations.

Williams' care team confirmed her dementia diagnosis, emphasizing that she is still able to perform many tasks independently and maintains her sense of humor. The team highlighted the importance of providing her with the necessary care and support.

According to Mayo Clinic, aphasia can impair verbal and written language skills and is often linked to conditions like stroke or brain injury. Frontotemporal dementia is a group of brain disorders that cause atrophy in specific brain regions, resulting in various symptoms such as speech difficulties and motor skill impairments.

Williams, who has faced multiple health issues in the past, including Graves' disease and alcohol abuse, entered a facility for cognitive issues in April 2023. Her family members have noticed positive changes in her condition, despite limited contact due to the guardian's rules.

While a documentary about Williams' life was set to premiere, her guardian sought to halt its release following the dementia diagnosis. However, the court denied the request, and the documentary is scheduled to air as planned.

Williams' family members have expressed optimism about her progress and emphasized her desire to take ownership of her story through the documentary. The series offers a glimpse into Williams' personal struggles and family dynamics, shedding light on her journey with honesty and transparency.
