A suspected gunman is in custody after a Wendy’s employee was shot at her workplace Tuesday night in south suburban Alsip.

The 17-year-old female employee was at the Wendy’s at 11110 S. Cicero Ave. about 10:10 p.m. when a gunman shot her in the leg, Alsip police chief Jay Miller said in a statement.

An Oak Lawn police officer arrived to the scene and applied a tourniquet to her leg, according to Oak Lawn Division Chief Ross Finnelly.

The employee was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in serious condition, Miller said. Her condition had been stabilized.

Police arrested the suspected gunman and recovered a weapon at the scene, Miller said. Charges are pending.

The officer who applied the tourniquet was exposed to the victim’s blood, and was taken to Christ Medical Center as a precaution, Finnelly said.

Alsip police did not immediately return calls seeking further detail.
