Wendell Smallwood to play vs. Eagles after Redskins make Adrian Peterson inactive

There could be some drama brewing on the Washington sidelines on Sunday, as NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported that the Redskins leading rusher from last season — Adrian Peterson — will be inactive on Sunday despite being healthy enough to play.

Last season in Washington, Peterson rushed for 1,042 yards (4.2 yards per carry), but the Redskins will now roll with second-year running back, Derrius Guice. Guice is coming off an ACL injury that robbed him of his rookie season.

With the Redskins souring on Peterson, Chris Thompson steps into the backup running back role and that would allow Wendell Smallwood to see some action against his former team as the third running back. The matchup is intriguing because Smallwood was waived by the Eagles last weekend and he’d like nothing better than to get revenge in the season opener.
