Wendell Smallwood proved he can be a capable fill-in with Derrius Guice out

A roster development has taken place for the Washington Redskins this year that seems like it’s running on a loop at this point. Year after year, it’s the exact same thing that has the team searching for an answer week in and week out.

Injuries happen, and the depth is depleted and replacements are required.

One of those replacements, running back Wendell Smallwood, saw his most action as a member of the Redskins during Sunday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers, and he proved to be a highly-capable addition. After signing with Washington earlier this season, Smallwood had 41 total yards, including an 18-yard catch and run that inspired confidence in the mid-season acquisition.

“It was fun just being able to get in there and actually get some plays and get the ball in my hand,” Smallwood said, via Redskins.com. “I wish we could’ve gotten the win, but I enjoyed it.”

Smallwood saw an uptick in usage due to an injury that held RB Chris Thompson out of the game, and he proved in that he could play well in his absence. While second-year RB Derrius Guice is set to return from the IR sooner rather than later, Smallwood proved on Sunday that in the interim, he can be a successful fill in when need be.
