Wendell Smallwood is an Eagles’ veteran who could be cut or traded

Wendell Smallwood has always managed to beat the odds when it comes to sticking on the Philadelphia Eagles roster year in and year out. 2019 could be the swan song for the running back who now faces stiff competition from Jordan Howard and a second-round pick, Miles Sanders. ESPN’s NFL Nation recently compiled a list of players from all 32 NFL teams who could be training camp casualties, and Smallwood got the call for the Eagles.

The fourth-year back out of West Virginia has managed to stick around even with the odds seemingly stacked against him, and he is coming off his most statistically productive season (364 yards, three TDs), as injuries presented an opportunity in 2018. The additions of rookie Miles Sanders and veteran Jordan Howard have deepened the talent pool, however, and he’ll be competing with the likes of Corey Clement, Josh Adams and Boston Scott for a place of the 53-man roster. — Tim McManus

The Eagles appear to have a role for Boston Scott and plans for Corey Clement and Josh Adams in 2019, that could leave Smallwood as the odd man out. He might also have the most trade value out of the three, which could go a long way as well.
