Wembley to host to 2023 Champions League final - 100 years after the original was opened

Wembley is set to host the 2023 UEFA Champions League final, according to reports.

The Associated Press have reported that England's national stadium will host the event, although there is yet to be an official announcement.

The reports explains that two people with knowledge of the process have spoken to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity to discuss the governing body's plans and there is expected to be confirmation at an executive committee meeting on September 24.

The 90,000-capacity Wembley is due to host the 2023 final to mark the centenary year of the original stadium first opening on the north London site.

Wembley last hosted a Champions League final in 2013, when Bayern Munich beat Borussia Dortmund in an-all Bundesliga affair.

Arjen Robben's last-minute winner secured a 2-1 win for Bayern against Jurgen Klopp's Dortmund.

The reports also reveals that Russia and Germany have been awarded the 2021 and 2022 finals, respectively.

Both countries had been vying for spots the 2021 final but it appears that Zenit St Petersburg's 68,000-capacity Gazprom Arena has got the nod, with the Allianz Arena set to host the following year.

This year's final will be held in Istanbul where current holders Liverpool won the unforgettable 2005 final against AC Milan.

The Reds were 3-0 at half-time, only for Rafa Benitez's side to stage an unthinkable comeback and triumph on penalties.
