Welshman Wynne Evans upstages grand opening of Tottenham's new stadium

It was the night all Spurs fans, players and officials were looking forward to since waving goodbye to White Hart Lane back in May 2017.

But their long awaited and much delayed opening of their £1bn 62,000-seater Tottenham Hotspur stadium next door was well and truly upstaged by Welsh opera singer Wynne Evans.

He may be a familiar face at the Principality Stadium belting out 'Bread of Heaven' before Welsh rugby matches.

But Evans is also a passionate Spurs fan and sang in the closing ceremony of the old White Hart Lane after the 2-1 defeat of Manchester United.

And though he's becoming a familiar face at the north London club, not everyone seemed to be in tune with who Evans was.

Welsh international defender Ben Davies was overheard by Spurs employees telling England star Dele Alli: "That's the guy from the Go Compare adverts."

And defender Danny Rose also looked a little bemused with the sight of Evans singing ‘Glory, Glory Tottenham Hotspur’ alongside the other musical acts from earlier in the ceremony.

And Evans himself tweeted out: "I hear talkSPORT actually thought I was Paul Potts."

Instead of Spurs making all the headline news, with their 2-0 win over Crystal Palace strengthening their quest to make the all-important top four in the Premier League, it was Evans who sent social media into meltdown afterwards.
