Welsh writer of drama In My Skin wins major Bafta award and delivers sweet speech

Since its release, Welsh drama In My Skin has been continually praised by critics and viewers alike. Written by Kayleigh Llewellyn, it began life as a short film but has since been ordered for two full series.

And on Sunday, April 24, Llewellyn picked up her latest accolade, a BAFTA Craft award in the drama writing category - and her speech was awesome.

The British Academy Television Craft awards were held at The Brewery in London. Stars such as Olivia Colman, Aisling Bea and fellow drama nominee Russell T Davies were all in attendance. During her acceptance speech, Llewellyn thanked Davies for his work on It’s A Sin. She described him as a "generous man" who was in "support of new talent" more than anyone else that she had met.

Llewellyn also paid thanks to Nerys Evans, her fellow executive producer for helping to get working-class representation within drama. Thanking Evans, she said: “I’m a benefit class woman from Cardiff, Sophie Willan, incredible benefit class writer, who is nominated for Best Comedy, we’re here because Nerys Evans kicked that door open for us.” Willan was nominated for Alma’s Not Normal.

At the end of her speech, the writer got choked up when thanking her mother. "My Mum, who let me tell our story, I love you" said Llewellyn, who based the series on her own experiences. Llewellyn grew up with a parent who suffered mental health problems.

In My Skin focuses on Welsh teenager Bethan (played by BAFTA award-winning actress Gabrielle Creevy) who is trying to live a double life as she negotiates her mother's mental illness, friendships and her sexuality. Her mother has bipolar disorder, and is sectioned in a psychiatric ward. Bethan dreams of being a writer, but attends a hostile and homophobic school.

Both series of In My Skin are available to watch on BBC iPlayer
