Welsh university selling off its island 'paradise'

A Welsh university has placed its own island 'paradise' up for sale.

Ynys Faelog is a small island in the Menai Strait reached by car over a tidal causeway.

Bangor University owns a large section of the island with a educational building on one side of Ynys Faelog, which is shared with one other property owner.

Now though the university - which like many universities is battling to balance its budget - has placed its part of the island on the market for £1m.

It has presented an opportunity for someone to buy their own slice of island life for either a home or potential business opportunity, subject to planning.

The section includes a two storey building with spectacular panoramic views across the Menai Strait and a private beach and headland, with access to a secluded rear garden area.

Ancillary buildings on the island include a single storey boathouse and garage near to a private slipway and tidal causeway.

It is being marketed by Williams & Goodwin estate agent and commercial agent Avison Young on behalf of Bangor University.

The tidal causeway means planning is needed to enter and exit the island by car although a stone walkway to the mainland is available all day long.

The island is split in two and the main section which is being offered for sale extends to approximately 2.5 acres.

Tim Goodwin, director at Williams & Goodwin, who is personally handling the sale of the property, said: “We often receive instructions which generate a buzz, and locally this disposal is generating considerable interest due to its unusual nature.

"The disposal offers a homeowner a truly unique opportunity, one which rarely comes around, and with off market interest having already been generated we anticipate a high level of demand now the property has been officially offered for sale at £1m."

He added: "For many, it is the stuff of dreams, with panoramic views, a private beach, its own secluded headland, and set amongst the mature trees and landscaped woodland areas.

"Yet it’s just a few minutes walk from Menai Bridge town centre with its independent retailers, coffee shops and restaurants."

Tom Merrifield, Director at the Avison Young Welsh Office in Cardiff, added: “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity."

The sale is being arranged through private treaty – further information is available through both,Williams & Goodwin 01248 355333 and Avison Young 02920 248917.
