Welsh trick that could knock 27% off the price of your takeaways

It's fair to say Tom Church knows a thing or two about saving money. But when the expert bargain hunter visited a friend in Wales he found out he'd been missing a pretty big one when it came to ordering food.

Tom, who is so committed to saving money he once spent a year , discovered the discount when looking for a takeaway in Wrexham.

"I was on a cheeky weekend in Wrexham, North Wales to see the Erddig National Trust mansion when, feeling hangry, I asked Emma, a local, if they have JustEat," Tom - founder of money-saving site LatestDeals.co.uk - explained.

It turned out that JustEat was very much present in the Welsh town, but a lot of the locals don't use it.

"We use FoodHub, it's much cheaper. We like to save money in Wales," Tom's friend Emma explained.

And the savings aren't small.

On exactly the same order, from the same restaurant, to the same address, Tom found he would save £4.50 by using FoodHub instead of JustEat.

That works out at a 27% saving - with the price of a takeaway costing £16.50 from JustEat but just £12 on FoodHub.

"There was no service charge, no delivery fee plus a 20% discount available," Tom explained.

"Even without the 20% discount it was less. I started to look at other takeaways and every time it was less."

FoodHub works much the same way JustEat does - signing up thousands of local restaurants so you can browse menus and make orders from one site, rather than trying to find them individually.

In fact, a lot of restaurants are on both - but there's a simple reason FoodHub often works out cheaper.

"JustEat charges users a service fee, plus takes a commission on the sales from the takeaway. FoodHub doesn't do that," Tom explained.

"So there are no extra costs passed on to customers."

But there is a smallish downside, too.

"FoodHub specialises in local takeaways. Individual restaurants and not big chains. So if you want KFC, Nando's, Gourmet Burger Kitchen then JustEat is still your best bet," he explained.
