Welsh tourist, 23, dies after falling through church roof in Australia

A Welsh tourist died when he fell through a church roof in Australia.

The incident happened at 2am on February 24 at Surfers Paradise on Queensland's Gold Coast.

The 23-year-old man was with five other men on the roof of St Vincent’s Catholic Church on Hamilton Avenue.

According to police he fell 10 metres through the church's skylight.

Speaking to ABC at the time, Acting Inspector Brendan Wiblen said police were “conducting a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances of this incident”.

Warren Kinne, a visiting priest who works for the parish, said he was turning people away a few hours later because services had been suspended.

He said: "Whatever they were doing on the roof I don’t know, but falling through to his death is very sad for the family. We’ll pray for them."

Detectives have interviewed five men aged between 19 and 31 from south-east Queensland and Western Australia. One of the men was taken to hospital with a head injury.

The identify of the man has not been released but he is understood to be from Wales.

A spokesman for the Coroner's Court of Queensland said: "Due to privacy provisions the Coroners Court of Queensland is unable to release information relating to the deceased’s identity but can confirm the matter is under investigation."
