Welsh sailing wizard Hannah Mills wary of rivals despite strong chance of Olympics glory

Hannah Mills and Eilidh McIntyre find themselves in prime position heading into the final day of sailing in the 470 class after a dream Sunday.

The duo finished first and third in the day’s two races to move up to first place with two races remaining.

They have been remarkably consistent over the course of the regatta, only once failing to finish in the top four across the first eight races.

And Mills, a gold medallist alongside Saskia Clark in Rio, was overjoyed at the performances.

The 33-year-old, who carried the flag for Team GB at the opening ceremony live on Eurosport and discovery+, said: “There’s still two more races, a lot can change.

"We’re just really happy with how we’ve put together the regatta so far, we’re just trying to be as consistent as we possibly can, keep chomping away, keep trying to get points back and, yeah, it’s super tight so we’ll just have to see how it goes tomorrow.”

Mills and McIntyre hold a one-point lead over Polish pair Agnieszka Skrzypulec and Jolanta Ogar, who would appear to be their main challengers for gold.

The Poles have already won three races, and despite GB moving ahead of them in the standings, McIntyre, 27, knows there is a lot of work still to do.

She added: “They’re sailing amazingly. We had a fantastic day today but so did they. It’s really tight on points, really close, and we’re just going to see what tomorrow brings and go out there and put in two good results.”

The action concludes on Monday with two final races with Mills on course for a medal at a third successive Games.
