Welsh rugby star James Hook announces his career is over as he is robbed of deserved farewell

James Hook has officially called time on his rugby career.

During a 14-year professional career, Hook earned 81 Wales caps, played over 200 times during stints at the Ospreys, Perpignan and Gloucester, and featured on the 2009 British and Irish Lions tour of South Africa.

He also represented Wales at the 2007, 2011 and 2015 Rugby World Cups.

The 34-year-old playmaker was due to hang up his boots at the end of this season but it has ended quietly after he was denied a swansong by the coronavirus pandemic.

In a statement, Hook confirmed: "Last week officially marked the end of my Ospreys playing contract and with it, my rugby playing career.

"I was hoping to finish off with a few more appearances but unfortunately, for obvious reasons, I wasn’t able to do that.

"I’m in the process of sorting out my first step onto the ladder post rugby, which, to be honest, I’m really excited about and this should be confirmed in the next couple of weeks.

"I’ll be staying in shape for my James Hook Testimonial match which now looks likely to take place sometime during 2021.

"Thanks very much to everyone who has supported me through what has been an incredible journey. Thank you!"
