Welsh rugby player banned for three years after taking steroid to lose weight

A Welsh rugby player has been banned for three years after testing positive for a banned substance last season.

Liam Jenkins, who was representing Bedwas RFC in the Championship at the time, submitted an out-of-competition urine sample to testers on December 9 last year. The samples returned traces of clenbuterol, a banned anabolic agent, which is usually taken to accelerate weight loss.

Jenkins, who plays in the front row, was given notice of his positive test in January this year and invited to provide an explanation. Instead, he admitted to taking the substance with 'full remorse', according the official written UK anti-doping judgement.

A month later, he was charged and admitted to taking the substance to 'aid with weight loss', calling it an 'error of judgement' in an effort to 'reduce... body fat'.

The 32-year-old was originally banned for four years, reduced to three for admitting to and accepting the charges promptly.
