Welsh rugby player allowed to play despite being sent off a week after stamping on opponent's head

Morgan Allen plays for Cardiff RFC against Llanelli at Parc y Scarlets in the Specsavers National Cup on Saturday despite being sent off last weekend.

The former Ospreys and Scarlets back-row forward got his marching orders for a stamp to the head of Lewys Millin during the Blue and Blacks’ 29-7 Indigo Group Premiership defeat at Carmarthen Quins.

Quins outside-half Jac Wilson had earlier been dismissed for a head-high tackle on Cardiff's James Beal.

Wilson has been named on Quins’ substitutes bench for their quarter-final cup trip to Championship leaders Pontypool.

Cardiff captain Allen and Wilson are able to play because players who have been sent off have a seven-day window to lodge an appeal against a red card.

That time-frame means a Welsh Rugby Union disciplinary panel usually doesn’t sit until the following week, freeing them for action.

Quins will face a Pontypool side without its head coach following Leighton Jones being hospitalised after being taken ill on Wednesday.

“Leighton is currently in a stable condition and is expected to remain in hospital over the coming days,” said Pooler, in a statement issued on Thursday.

“Pontypool RFC’s WRU Specsavers National Cup quarter-final tie versus Carmarthen Quins RFC will continue to be played on Saturday as scheduled and the team will be headed up by Tom Hancock (backs coach), Andrew Quick, (defence coach) and Rhys Dyer (head of performance) in Leighton’s absence.”

Under Jones’ guidance, Pontypool are currently enjoying their third consecutive season unbeaten in the league with 15 wins on the bounce.
