Welsh rugby match abandoned as player knocked unconscious and ambulance called

A Welsh Rugby Union Bowl encounter had to be abandoned over the weekend amid concern for an injured player.

Glais’ home tie with Alltwen in District E2 was stopped on 65 minutes with the hosts leading 25-12.

The referee made the decision after an Alltwen player was knocked out in an accidental collision.

While an ambulance was called to the ground, the official decided the game shouldn’t continue with the player unconscious and the full extent of his injury unknown.

He subsequently regained consciousness and was able to walk from the pitch unaided.

An Alltwen RFC spokesman said: “One of our boys took a knock to the head and was out cold.

“It was an accidental collision with one of our players. I think he took a knee to the head in a clear-out situation.

“While an ambulance was called, the referee was unhappy for the game to continue. The boy was on the pitch and we didn’t know the full extent of the situation.

“He was laid out on the ground until he came around but he was able to walk off the pitch on his own. He appeared to be all right later on.

“We went through relevant procedures with him, reminding him that he had to go to the hospital to be checked out.

“He did seem fine afterwards, but you can’t be too careful and we obviously want to hear that he’s been fully assessed at the hospital.

“We want to make sure he’s fit and well.”
