Welsh regions to play against each other in rare pre-season clash

The Dragons will entertain the Scarlets in a pre-season Welsh derby in preparation for the upcoming campaign.

In a rare twist, two Welsh regions will lock horns in a 'friendly' as new bosses Dean Ryan (Dragons) and Brad Mooar (Scarlets) get to grips with their squads.

Both teams will be without their internationals as the game is scheduled to take place on September 14, three days after Warren Gatland's side jet off to the Rugby World Cup.

The two sides last clashed on Judgement Day, when the Dragons stunned the men from the west in a rip-roaring 34-32 victory.

The kick off time is to be confirmed but it will be Mooar's second glimpse of his new charges after their trip to face Jersey on September 7.

Cardiff Blues have also announced a pre-season fixture against Bedford Blues, also on September 14, which is being billed as the Mikey Rayer derby.

The Cardiff RFC favourite is now director of rugby at the Championship club, who will welcome Arms Park outfit.

“Bedford will provide us with a solid test early on and the opportunity to try some new combinations and options both attack and defence," said Cardiff Blues boss John Mulvihill.

"Travelling away from the Arms Park will also give us an opportunity to trial new match-day preparations in order to get our away from home record started.

“There is also a nice link with Mike Rayer, who is remembered so fondly at the Arms Park, director of rugby up there and I’m sure there will be a good travelling contingent from the region.”

As for the Ospreys , at the moment, they have a pre-season game against Hartpury RFC at The Gnoll on August 30, kicking off at 7:30pm.
