Welsh region swoop to land second international star from English champions Exeter Chiefs

The Ospreys have followed up the capture of Tomas Francis from English Premiership heavyweights Exeter Chiefs by also signing veteran Tonga hooker Elvis Taione on a one-year deal from the Devon club.

The Welsh region were linked with a move for the Tongan two weeks ago and the move has been confirmed.

A third Exeter player, Wales wing Alex Cuthbert, has also been rumoured to be on the Ospreys' radar.

Taione, 38, moves to the Liberty Stadium after Scott Otten recently announced he had to retire early.

"Elvis has a proven track record in a title-winning side and that foundation was built on a dominant set piece," said Ospreys boss Toby Booth.

Taione joined Exeter seven years ago and helped them become one of the dominant teams in English and European rugby.

He previously played Super Rugby in Australia for Western Force and the Waratahs and was part of the Tongan side at the 2015 World Cup.

"Tomas Francis and myself moved to Exeter in the same season and we are leaving and moving to the Ospreys in the same season," said Taione.

"He followed me to Exeter and I am following him to Swansea.

"I see the Ospreys being in a similar place to where Exeter were when I joined them and I hope my experience can help the team develop."
