Welsh region rule themselves out of race to sign Alex Cuthbert

Cardiff Blues have revealed they are not one of the teams in the market for Wales and Lions winger Alex Cuthbert.

The 47-times capped Cuthbert is out of contract at Exeter this summer and there are believed to be a number of clubs interested in signing him, including the Ospreys and potentially two other Welsh regions.

But he will not be rejoining his former team at the Arms Park, where he spent seven years.

Blues director of rugby Dai Young said: "Alex did great things here and he is a great player.

"But, at this moment in time, if we were going to recruit and spend money it would be up front rather than a wing.

"He’s not somebody we are in the marker for.

"Whoever signs him, they have got a fantastic player on their hands. Good luck to him and good luck to them.

"But we are certainly not in the market for Alex. It’s not a position we are looking to recruit at the minute."

Should the 31-year-old Cuthbert return to Wales, he would be available for international rugby once more.

Since joining Exeter in 2018, he has been ineligible under the 60-cap rule.

His 48 Tests for Wales and the Lions have brought him 17 tries, with his last Welsh cap coming against Georgia in November 2017.

He scored 46 tries in 115 games for the Blues, while he has been hampered by injury during his time at Exeter.
