Welsh region release video showing the dramatically different way they have to train amid coronavirus pandemic

The Cardiff Blues have given fans a unique insight into their new training arrangement at a Cardiff leisure centre.

John Mulvihill's side have had to relocate on a temporary basis to Pentwyn Leisure Centre as their usual training facility - The Cardiff Arms Park - is being used as part of Dragon's Heart Hospital.

This week, the regions returned to training as they prepare for the Welsh derbies on August 22 and 29, adhering to strict guidelines amid the coronavirus pandemic.

It starts when players arrive at the facility.

"When we arrive, the boys will be in their cars and one of the medical guys will temperature check them," said Blues boss Mulvihill.

"If they fail that check, they'll be checked a second, third, fourth time and will be sent home if they can't go in."

Upon entering the facility, players and staff will also be checked by a thermal temperature scanner.

They then enter a one way system, with injured players going one way to the treatment room, and those in search of the gym head off in a different direction.

Strength and conditioning staff must wear a mask at all time when in the weights room, players are not required to do the same.

"Any time we're in the gym, the staff members have to have masks on and the boys can just lift away," explained Mulvihill.

"Obviously the huffing, puffing and sweating is going to come from inside that gym. What we do to stay Covid-compliant is that the boys will clean down their area and they'll walk out."

Players will leave the weights room through a different door to the one they entered, sticking to the one way system.

There is also an electronic track and trace system in place where players and staff 'tap-in' and 'tap out' of different 'zones' within the complex.

This means it is easy to find where various personnel have been and when they were there.

For outdoor running sessions, players still gather their GPS units so their efforts can be closely monitored. They sanitise their hands upon entering a 3G pitch and sanitise them again upon leaving.

They will not be using the shower facilities. Instead, they get straight in their cars and return home after a session is completed.

"The boys will pick up their GPS units and enter the 3G pitch, there's another sanitary station," said Mulvihill.

"Once the running session is done on the 3G, it's back out the exit after washing the hands, back in the car and then home."
