Welsh Premiership champions Merthyr RFC want to build a new clubhouse at their ground

The Welsh Premiership champions are planning to build a new clubhouse at their ground.

Merthyr RFC have submitted an application to Merthyr Tydfil Council for a new clubhouse at The Wern on Penlan View in Ynysfach.

The plan is for the new clubhouse and community hub to be used for both private and public social events.

Club officials say the 673sq m clubhouse would employ two full-time staff and eight part-time staff.

The area where the new clubhouse would be is currently used as a car park and the works will involve the re-positioning of a floodlight.

Merthyr RFC , who this season won their third Premiership title in a row, are looking to acquire the grassed bank located between the Wern and Penlan View as part of the plans.

The club held a drop-in event earlier this month to show residents the plans and so they could ask questions about them.

Questions were asked about parking issues on match days, but the club said it was addressing the matter with council planning officers on how to tackle this.

There were also concerns raised about potential noise disturbance.

However, Merthyr RFC has sought to allay those fears by saying it had very clear standards about the behaviour it expected from users of the clubhouse.
