Welsh polling station opens late because ballot papers didn't turn up

A polling station in Cardiff opened late because the ballot papers didn't arrive on time.

Polls for the General Election opened at 7am this morning - and some voters in Fairwater went to the Presbyterian Church to cast their vote early before doing the school run or going to work.

However, some people were turned away and told to come back later following a "mishap with ballot papers".

One candidate branded the situation "a shambles", while others voiced their anger at the delay.

Throughout Thursday voters will head to the polls to cast their ballots in what has been billed as the most important General Election in a generation.

Polling stations across the UK opened at 7am and people can vote until 10pm.

A Cardiff Council spokeswoman said: “The opening of a polling station in Fairwater was delayed this morning due to a mishap with ballot papers.

"A small number of people were unable to vote before the station opened at 7.20am.

"We apologise for the inconvenience and encourage those affected this morning to return to the station which is open until 10pm this evening.

"If anyone affected is unable to return today, please call Electoral Services on 029 2087 2087.”

Fairwater falls under the The Cardiff West constituency.
