Welsh Olympic champion cyclist Elinor Barker hit by car whose driver didn't stop

Welsh Olympic champion Elinor Barker was hit by a car while training ahead of the Tokyo Olympics.

Cardiff native Barker, 26, revealed the incident happened at a roundabout in Manchester, where she is based with Team GB, and said the driver did not stop after driving straight into her.

She admitted her Olympic dreams could have been over because of someone who "couldn't wait five seconds".

The track and road cyclist, who is Olympic champion, world record holder and world, European and Commonwealth Games Champion, shared what had happened on Thursday after returning to training.

In a social media post on Instagram she said: "Feeling pretty relieved to be back to normal training today after getting hit by a car while out training last week. A driver didn’t stop at the roundabout (and didn’t even stop to see if I was ok) and went straight into me.

"I’m aware that I’m so lucky it wasn’t worse, minor damage done and I had less than a week out of training. But also feeling pretty unlucky that after almost five years of training for the Olympics, I have to share the road with somebody who could easily have ended it all because they couldn’t wait 5 seconds.

"I’m probably preaching to the choir here, as I guess most of my followers will be cyclists and aware of all of this. But seriously, waiting TWO SECONDS to check for a cyclist won’t hurt you. Not waiting might hurt somebody else."

Barker, whose cycling journey began at Maindy Flyers, won team pursuit gold at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
