A Welsh NHS worker who was quoted £10,000 for a new kitchen has revealed the results of her DIY transformation for just £78.
Sarah Boe, 43, from Neath, used basics like paint and tile stickers to achieve the new look and will instead use the money she saved to take her children on holiday when the coronavirus lockdown ends.
Sarah, a mental health nurse, said she used bargain DIY supplies to change her kitchen cupboards, work surface and tiles.
The mum-of-five said: "I had a quote for a kitchen which was over £10,000, which was way above what I could afford to spend.
"'I bought 10m of DC-Fix from Vinyl Warehouse as I needed the extra width for the worktops, I spent £49.
"I also bought Wilko cupboard paint which was on offer at £8, and used Wilko tile paint at £15 a tin.
"I then bought stickers for the tiles to make it look less clinical, which cost £6 on Amazon. I had the brushes and rollers already so I didn't need to purchase those."
Sarah, who is due to end self-isolation today after her son became ill, shared tips from her home renovation on website LatestDeals.co.uk.
She added: "I washed everything with sugar soap prior to application.
"The biggest tip for me would be to sand the worktops slightly as any residue left on then will cause bubble in the DC which is a pain.
"If you make a mistake with painting the cupboard, wait until it dries then lightly sand and go over.
"I used a small roller and applied two coats for better coverage on the kitchen cupboards.
"I applied one coat of paint on the tiles with a paint brush - you can't tell when the paint has dried that a brush was used. I applied the sticker by hand and wiped then over with a soft cloth."
For Sarah, the money saved by the two-weekend project will also be put to good use by her family.
She said: "It took two full weekends. I was worried at first in case it went disastrously wrong but halfway through I was pleased as I knew it was going to look okay.
"I was very pleased with the way the kitchen came out considering I have never attempted any DIY on this scale before. I hope [when coronavirus is over] I am able to use some cash I have left on a holiday with my children which is a huge bonus!
"I am off work [working from home] until next week as my youngest son has been very poorly. For people who are not experiencing any symptoms and want to keep busy this would definitely keep people occupied as it's very addictive."
