Welsh leeks are set to join Cornish clotted cream, Cheddar cheese and Melton Mowbray pork pies and be given protected status.
The country’s national emblem, Welsh growers have made an application under the Protected Geographical Indication scheme – the British version of the EU protected status.
Tim Casey, Chairman of the British Leek Growers Association said: “It is claimed that in 640AD the Briton King Cadwallader and his men were battling invading Saxons.
“To distinguish themselves from the enemy, the Welsh wore leeks in their hats – and subsequently gained victory.
“Soldiers from the Welsh Guards Regiment wear leeks in their helmets on St David’s Day – Wales’ national day.”

Defra confirmed the product name of “Welsh leeks” is currently under consideration for registration as a UK Geographical Indication.
