Welsh kid Jeremiah Azu becomes shock British 100m champion in amazing 9.90 seconds

Young Welsh athlete Jeremiah Azu caused a stunning shock to win the 100m British title before vowing to change sprinting in this country forever.

Azu recorded a wind-assisted time of 9.90 seconds that would otherwise have been a championship record. There is a huge buzz around the 21-year-old, who was last year's European Under-23 champion. He becomes the first Welsh 100m UK champion for 53 years, since Ron Jones won the title in 1969.

Azu stunned defending European 100m champion Zharnel Hughes and Reece Prescod to cross the line first.

"I had it on my lock screen on my phone since last year - 2022 British champion - and to stand here and say it I'm so grateful," said Azu.

"It's just the beginning, I'm 21 and I'm looking to change sprinting in Britain forever."

The tailwind actually means he is yet to record an official time under the 10.05 mark required to go to the World Championships, but he is set to earn a place in the GB squad for next month through world rankings.

Azu, who hails from Rumney in Cardiff, told Walesonline in an in-depth interview in 2019 : "Hopefully, one day I'll be up there, Olympic final, World Championship final, stuff like that.

"That's where I want to be. I want my family's name to be known."
