Welsh hospital reopens after two-week closure following Norovirus outbreak

A Carmarthen hospital reopened on Tuesday morning after closing for over two weeks following a virus outbreak.

Glangwili General Hospital in Carmarthen closed all wards on December 16 after confirming a number of cases of the norovirus and flu.

The wards remained closed to all visitors during the Christmas period in an attempt to stop the spread of the virus.

Hywel Dda University Health Board, which manages the hospital, said that visiting was only to be permitted in extenuating circumstances and that the situation was being carefully monitored.

Norovirus and flu are more common in the winter months and the area has seen a number of recent outbreaks in November and December.

The closure followed a ban on visitors from the Prince Phillip Hospital in Llanelli earlier this month following an outbreak. Ysgol Bro Myrddin in Carmarthen also had nearly 200 pupils absent on one day in November after a similar outbreak.

Hywel Dda University Health Board has confirmed that the Carmarthen hospital reopened all wards on New Year's Eve except the Merlin Ward, which remains restricted.

Everything you need to know: Norovirus

A spokesperson for the health board said: "Glangwili Hospital has reopened to visitors today following the outbreak of Norovirus and Flu over the Christmas period.  This applies to all wards except for Merlin Ward, which remains restricted to visits from close family and friends only (no children). Those wishing to visit Merlin Ward should contact the nurse in-charge to confirm visiting arrangements."
