Welsh holidaymaker dies in kayak tragedy in New Zealand

A Welsh holidaymaker died in a kayak tragedy after being pulled from the sea in New Zealand.

David Wright, 72, was around 500 meters from shore when he fell out of the kayak and drowned.

He had been paddling in the Tasman Bay near Nelson, in the country's South Island when the tragedy happened.

Mr Wright, listed as living in Cardiff, was pulled to shore and medics carried out CPR but he was sadly pronounced dead.

A spokesman for New Zealand Police said: "We can now release the name of the man who died as a result of a kayaking incident in Tasman Bay.

"He was David Robert Wright, 72, of Wales.

"Our sympathies are with his family and friends at this time."

A file has been passed to Christchurch coroner's office.
