Welsh holiday firms in the dark as travel rules still not announced

Welsh holiday firms have been left in the dark on travel rules as England's lockdown is set to end this week.

First Minister Mark Drakeford yesterday revealed the new hospitality rules for Wales - which includes an alcohol ban and 6pm closing time.

Holiday accommodation, like hotels, B&Bs and self catering lets, can stay open but Mr Drakeford failed to clarify new travel rules - saying it would be announced later this week.

But with England's lockdown ending on December 2 businesses are desperate to know whether visitors from over the border - or even in Wales - can come to stay.

Currently they don't know if they can accept new bookings or if they have to cancel those they have already taken.

Neil Rowlands, of Tre-Ysgawen Hall hotel near Llangefni on Anglesey, said it was "completely unthought out".

He added: "Being drip fed rules and feeling they are reactive rather than proactive.

"We have known about the English lockdown finishing for weeks, and being planning our new rules again for a considerable period.

"It seems a complete disregard for business."

Angela Harper, who owns Pale Hall Hotel near Bala with husband Alan, said: "We have been going round and round all night on this - every time we think we have it nailed and can make it work we remember we don’t know about the travel restrictions.

"It’s impossible to plan without knowing.

"How on earth could they not tell us that?"

Jim Ellis, whose family run boutique self catering business Plas Gwyn near Pwllheli, spoke of his frustration that they still don't know the travel rules.

He said: "Do they realise this is two days away?

"I have bookings from England, are they allowed to come?"
