Welsh high school goes into lockdown over 'threatening message'

A secondary school in Powys was put on lockdown after a pupil received a "threatening" message online.

Newtown High School, in Newtown, went into a full lockdown on Monday, June 14, as a precaution after one of its pupils received the message on social media.

Officers from Dyfed-Powys Police were called to the school following the reports and confirmed that enquiries into the source of the message are ongoing.

A spokeswoman for the force said: "Dyfed-Powys Police attended Newtown High School following a report that a pupil had received a threatening message on social media. As a precaution the school went into a short lockdown which has now been lifted. Enquiries into the source of the message continue."

Powys County Council explained that the lockdown was lifted at the end of the school day, when police advised that it was safe to do so.

A spokesman for the council added: "Earlier this afternoon, Newtown High School went into a short and full lockdown as a precaution following information that is being investigated by Dyfed-Powys Police. The lockdown was lifted at the end of the school day after police confirmed it was safe to do so."
