Welsh Government update on Covid alert plan, tourism and travel

Welsh Government says it remains on track to reopen parts of the tourism sector this month and said the updated Alert plan would be published this afternoon.

First Minister Mark Drakeford confirmed that from Monday garden centres can reopen and non-essential goods can be sold at supermarkets.

He added that they remained on course for parts of the tourism sectors to start to reopen from March 27 - with a final decision on this next week.

Under the plan this could see self contained tourism accommodation reopen and organised outdoor children's activities start.

Travel would be restricted to people in Wales with rules in England and Wales preventing overnight stays for people in England.

He added that they were considering reopening outdoor areas at historic places and gardens at the same time.

On this date if things continued to improve then stay local restrictions could be lifted.

He said final decisions would be made before the end of next week.

On the Alert plan he confirmed this would be updated by the end of the day. This would also include potential updates for other parts of the economy - with calls for a roadmap from sectors like hospitality.

Welsh Government has come under fire for not keeping to criteria on its own Coronavirus Control Plan.

Mr Drakeford said the updated plan would take into account the more transmissible Kent variant and the success of the vaccination programme in Wales.
