Welsh Government gives green light for underground attractions to open

Wales's mines and caves can reopen from this weekend after the green light from Welsh Government.

This month First Minister Mark Drakeford announced indoor attractions could reopen on July 13 as he eased the coronavirus lockdown restrictions.

But he said a small number of underground visitor attractions will remain closed because of the "higher risks associated with these environments".

He said Welsh Government would continue to work with these attractions towards safe re-opening.

Now Health Minister Vaughan Gething has announced that these sites will be able to open from Saturday.

The news was welcomed by slate mining attraction Llechwedd in Blaenau Ffestiniog, which will reopen Llechwedd Deep Mine on Saturday after nearly four months of lockdown.

Michael Bewick, managing director of Llechwedd, said: “We have been in close touch with our team over the months of lockdown and more recently have been speaking to our community.

"We are keen to ensure that this important part of Wales’ cultural heritage is once again open and are making every effort to ensure that it is a safe experience for our team, our visitors and our community."

Llechwedd has evolved from one of the largest slate mining operations in the country to a major tourist attraction, first opening in 1972, and in recent years welcoming Zip World and Antur ‘Stiniog downhill mountain biking onto the 2,000-acre site.

A spokeman added: "For the safety of visitors and employees of Llechwedd, the mine tours will run at a reduced capacity and will include sanitization points throughout.

"Visitors will also be given face masks before their descent on the railway – the steepest of its kind in the country."
